The Given Note – Seamus Heaney

“So whether he calls it spirit music

Or not, I don’t care. He took it’

Out of wind off  mid-Atlantic

He got this air out of the night”

 These words are what inspired me to create this artwork

I remember a day, a few years ago, when I went hiking in the Wicklow mountains with my daughter  - in – law.

It was a dull and windy day and as we climbed higher, the wind picked up and the mountain goats sought shelter and the deer retreated  but we trundled on, nevertheless.

At some point, we were running out of water and as we drank our last drops,  we spontaneously started humming into our empty water bottles. The music was ethereal , beautiful even. Neither of us being  au fait with musical technology , with didn’t record it ( though I expect that coverage wasn’t conducive anyhow)

 I love that he captured the spirit music of the Atlantic… I love the unhinged  melodies that he discovered.

 I chose to use alcohol ink on this piece to express how he sailed alone to the island, love the thought of being alone there and being quiet, just listening and absorbing the music the music of ‘The Given Note’
