TEA ON THE BOG Limited Fine Art Print By Dee McNally (1/75) (In Deirdre's own words)
Tea in the bog - Yvonne O’Connor
“And over the bogland came the smell and the colour of everything you would like to frame in a dream”.
These were the words that inspired me to create the artwork
Have you ever experienced an unexpected scent on the breeze which becomes a portal for which memories trickle through?
Sometimes the scent is familiar, but the memory is elusive and hard to pin down, and sometimes the trickle is not a trickle, but a flood of remembered colours, tastes, and emotions which catch you unaware and you are startled by the clarity of a moment in time which you had long forgotten
I chose pastels to create with, the medium lends itself well to the hazy, sweltering day in which the men toiled, and the vibrant red of the mother’s dress.
And the welcome sight on the horizon, heralding some respite , was my mother, your mother, a gentle creature. Not to be confused with delicate. She was capable and loving and her red dress stood out like a beacon as she picked her steps carefully through the bogland, carefully balancing the boiling tea and bag of food. My heart swelled as I saw her approach and lay out the food she had prepared.
She is everyone’s mother. Whether or not you ever set foot on the bog, she is the mother that did her best for you, stood up for you, sometimes in the most difficult of times.
All mother’s ought to wear a red dress sometimes in their lives
