The Thatcher – a poem in praise – Siobhan Ni Luain
‘For glory’s light in grudging fields.
I crowned the roofs with gold.’
These were the words that inspired me to create the artwork
Standing at the bridge , the old man sees more than the mountains before him.
His entire life is woven into the landscape. A hard life. After years spent honing his craft , he became the master. He was a thatcher. His calloused hands deftly coaxed the straw, tucking it in as safely, as a mother with her newborn infant.
The thatcher, that’s the only name I know him by, but I am drawn to him as a fellow artist, a sculptor perhaps? I feel privileged to meet him
His purpose was to provide protection from the elements but what he created was more than just a serviceable roof. It was the warm glow in the evening light that welcomed home a weary soul like a comforting blanket.
Older now, frail. With no-one to follow in his footsteps, he laments the demise of his life’s work evident in the scene before him. When he was a younger man, the mountains came alive in the evening light. It was a sight to behold from the very spot where he is now standing.
Only a few thatched cottages left now. I take my leave of him as he watches the last rays of the setting sun ‘crown the roofs with gold’
I used the medium of ink on yupo paper to capture the images that filled my head as I read this poem.
